How yoga classes can help arthritis

More than 350 million people worldwide suffer from arthritis. Nearly 40 million of those people are men, women and children in the USA.

Arthritis is an ailment that cause people to have limited mobility and suffer from aches and pains in the joints.

A recent study has shown that people with arthritis who exercise regularly, typically experience less pain, more energy, improved sleep and better day-to-day function than those who do not.

What the studies show about Yoga classes for arthritis

A study at Husson University found that low impact exercises such as yoga helps people to “utilize the full range of motion to their joints and makes them feel like they are working without strain”.

A further study by researchers at John Hopkins university echoed these findings. The study investigated whether Yoga could benefit osteoarthritis sufferers and whether it was safe for them.

The participants of the study took part in two hour-long yoga sessions a week for eight weeks and spent one hour at home doing yoga. At the end of the eight weeks, 20% of the participants reported improvements in pain, energy, mood and ability to complete physical tasks. 9 months later, these benefits were still evident.

“People with arthritis who are considering yoga should discuss with their doctors about which specific joints are of concern.

Find a yoga teacher who asks the right questions about limitations and works closely with you as an individual. Start with gentle yoga classes.” said Dr Clifton O. Bingham III.
